If you are looking for a brief getaway from the busy city life, a 2-day adventure along Spain’s picturesque Valencian coast might be exactly what you need! A weekend to soak in the charm and beautfy of Dénia, Xàbia and Gandía’s surrounding nature is the perfect way to relax and escape the city heat. Each of these coastal gems offers its own unique appeal. From historical landmarks and vibrant markets to stunning beaches. This guide highlights the best ways to embrace the natural beauty of the region, promising an unforgettable escape.
Dénia: A Cultural & Culinary Delight
Our adventure began in Dénia, a town renowned for its rich history, vibrant port area and culinary scene. Dénia is famous for its impressive castle, which offers panoramic views of the town and the Mediterranean Sea. Although the castle was impressive, dining in Denia was the definitive highlight of this little city. With an abundance of dining options, the coastal town won us over without much effort. The spot that won over our hearts was the Street Food Market Els Magazinos. We experienced it as the lively center of gastronomic treats, showcasing a rich variety of flavors in regional delicacies and specialities from around the wolrd. Its cozy feel, thanks to the decor of little lamps and lanters and colorful posters and strings was an amazing addition to the entire dining experience.
After enjoying (multiple) delicious meals, we explored the lively market at the port. The set-up of colorful huts create a vibrant atmosphere, which is impossible not to love. The market is open daily into the early morning hours until the late summer months. For more details on the opening hours, please visit this website: https://denia.net/port-market
Tip of the Trip:
Make a reservation or be prepared to wait for a table during the busy summer season, as the popular eateries fill up quickly.
Xàbia: A Rejuvenating Escape to Cala La Granadella
Our first day trip to Xàbia was all about relaxation and the beauty of nature. We avoided the city itself and focused on unwinding at the stunning Cala La Granadella.
This picturesque bay is one of the most famous calas around Xàbia. Initially, we were worried about entering an overcrowded space, due to its popularity. But since the other coves we considered, such as Cala Ambolo and Cala “Secreta”, are inaccessible by foot, we took the risk. Fortunately, we were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the entire day in crystal-clear water and the peaceful environment of the cove. The lack of large waves, thanks to the surrounding cliffs, makes it an excellent spot for swimming. Additionally, it’s a great location for sea glass and pretty-stone hunting, adding a bit of childlike adventure spirit to your beach day.
Tip of the Trip:
Bring water shoes! As Cala La Granadella features a stone beach, those with sensitive feet might find it uncomfortable without them.
Gandía: A Relaxing Beach Day at Platja de Venecia
Our second day excursion was to the surrounding beaches of Gandía. Our first stop was the popular, and therefore more populated, Playa de Gandía. However, seeking a calmer beach experience away from the crowds, we opted for the less obvious choice: Playa de Venecia. Arriving there, we found that the strong waves of this beach make it ideal for those seeking excitement. Therefore, if you are one who enjoys kite or windsurfing, this is the beach for you! For those looking for a more easygoing beach day, don’t worry, this beach is still an amazing choice with its sandy shores and beautiful dunes.
Tip of the Trip:
Bring your own snacks, as there are very few dining options around this beach. Additionally, use official parking areas to avoid a hefty fine of 100€!
As you can see,
it is very much possible to explore the diverse offerings of the Valencian coast in just 2 days. Whether you’re indulging in local cuisine in Dénia, soaking up the sun on the beaches of Gandía, or hunting for sea glass in the Cala La Granadella close to Xàbia, this itinerary provides a delightful snapshot of what this beautiful region has to offer. Enjoy your own adventure along the Valencian coast, and be sure to take in all the unique experiences these towns have to offer!
