Top 10 Tips For An Amazing Stay In Dublin

Planning a trip to Dublin? Excellent choice! Ireland’s vibrant capital has much to offer and is a perfect blend of rich history, lively culture, and stunning landscapes. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this exceptional city, and luckily, I had a friend living there who gave me valuable advice before I even stepped on the plane. Now, I’m sharing those tips with you. Welcome to the Top 10 Tips for an Amazing Stay in Dublin, straight from an insider.

Tip 1: Pack For All Seasons

Dublin’s weather is famously unpredictable, and it’s no exaggeration. One moment, you might enjoy the sunshine; the next, you’ll face strong winds. Then, you’ll find yourself seeking shelter from a 2-minute rain shower. Therefore the advice is clear: pack layers! Include a waterproof jacket, a sweater (even in summer), and comfortable shoes. Feel free to try an umbrella, but with the strong winds, it might not be much help.

Tip 2: Stay Up-To-Date On Attractions

Before you go, check for exceptional attractions in Dublin during your stay. You’d be surprised at the number of smaller or lesser known events, that might not be on your radar. For example, a Drag Brunch at Wigwam. Eventbrite is a great site to find unconventional events – like a Shrek-themed pottery painting night! Definitely doing that next time. Visit Eventbrite here.

Tip 3: Explore On Foot

Yes, it’s a common tip, but trust me, it’s worth it. Dublin’s city center is large, but if you want to soak in the capital’s charm, start walking! Get lost (figuratively speaking) and stroll through cobbled streets, enjoy the beautifully decorated pubs, visit historic landmarks, and discover new delicious restaurants. Walking is the best way to immerse yourself in the atmosphere and stumble upon local treasures. Plus, Dublin is very walkable despite its size, so you can save on public transportation within the city.

Tip 4: Visit Free Attractions

Many of Dublin’s top attractions are free to visit. Trinity College’s grounds, St. Stephen’s Green, the National Museum of Ireland, the Chester Beatty Library and the General Post Office building are just a few examples. These landmarks are architectural masterpieces, so if you love gorgeous buildings and saving money, these spots will make you happy.

Tip 5: Experience The Pub-Culture

Apart from the weather, Dublin is most famous for something else: its pubs! No trip to Dublin is complete without visiting a traditional Irish pub – and this isn’t up for debate. Each has its own individual flair, and many offer live music, making the experience even cozier. Popular spots include The Brazen Head (Ireland’s oldest pub), O’Donoghue’s, and The Temple Bar. But locals recommend skipping the touristy pubs and to visit any other. They all will give you the same joyful, yet cozy atmosphere!

Tip 6: Try Guinness Or Opt For Hop-House

When in Dublin, trying a pint of Guinness is almost unavoidable. But be warned, it’s an acquired taste. Personally, I did not have said taste. Regardless, I’m glad I tried it, and that I had a local steer me towards something more up my ally. So, if you’re like me and can’t quite enjoy a true dark Guinness (may the Irish gods forgive us), try Hop House 13—a lager also brewed by Guinness.

Tip 7: Leave Dublin

Dublin has lots to offer, but don’t stop there! The surrounding areas are just as breathtaking, with stunning landscapes and charming villages. Consider a day trip to Howth, Glendalough, or the Cliffs of Moher. These excursions will provide you with amazing views of Ireland’s natural beauty and are easily accessible from the city by train.

Tip 8: Try Local Food

Ireland’s hearty cuisine is a must-try. Don’t miss traditional dishes like Irish Guinness stew or fish and chips. For a modern twist, try the Spice Bag—perhaps at Xi’an Street Food—or the pizza at Bambino, said to be Dublin’s best according to locals. But be prepared for a line!

Tip 9: Be Prepared For High Prices

Dublin can be, what am I saying, IS an expensive city, especially in the city center. Hence, prepare, at least mentally, for higher prices on food, drinks, and accommodation and budget accordingly.

Tip 10: Distinguish Between Second-Hand & Vintage Shops

If you’re into sustainable shopping, know the difference between second-hand and vintage shops. Second-hand shops offer a wide range of pre-owned items, often at bargain prices. Vintage shops, on the other hand, focus on fashion from past decades, offering curated pieces with a distinct retro flair, which are not second-hand!
