5 Lesser-Known Free-Time Activities In Valencia

Valencia, a vibrant city that is impossible not to love. The stunning architecture, delicious cuisine and approximately 300 days of sun each year being just few of the many reasons. I myself have been living here on and off since July 2023 and whenever I leave, I cannot wait to come back! A big part of the city’s flair for me is the wide variety of spare-time enjoyments. As someone who gets easily bored of everyday routines, I’m a big fan of finding new things to try. If that fits your personality as well, let me give you a taste of five fun and lesser-known free-time activities in Valencia city!

1. Painting in the Park

The perfect choice for all creative heads out there! This hobby has been part of multiple beautiful Saturdays already, and I can’t wait to do my next painting session! When I go to the park on my own, I simply get canvases and acrylic paint from Tedi. But you can get the supplies from any creative store around the city. In case you prefer these kinds of activities to be organized for you and don’t like to worry about buying and bringing supplies, I’ve got you covered! My #1 recommendation would be the ‘Textured Art’ workshop. The organisator Alexandra takes care of all the supplies, including the plaster with which you are free to design your own inspired creation. The workshop takes around three hours and is a great way to spend some time in nature with like-minded people! Check out Alexandra’s Instagram to get the next available dates for some textured painting in the park. I, for one, can’t wait for the next time I’ll be able to join. Maybe I’ll see you there!

2. Live-Music at La Fábrica de Hielo

An absolute must while staying in Valencia, no matter if long- or short-term! La Fábrica de Hielo, an old ice factory transformed into a dynamic cultural space, is the perfect venue to experience the local music scene. The genres of the live music events vary from jazz and indie rock to electronic beats. This mix ensures that all music lovers will be equally served. And let me just say that each band (that I have seen so far) knows how to put on a performance worth attending!

3. ‘Cake by the Ocean’

And other than the Jonas Brothers’ song, I mean that literally! Trust me, savoring delicious chocolate cake while watching the waves has the potential to quickly become your new favorite activity. However, carrying a whole cake onto the sandy area isn’t pleasant. Therefore, I recommend getting a piece of your choice from La Más Bonita, right in front of Patacona Beach.

Of course, this endeavor is not just limited to cake but can be extended to any favorite snack! My personal non-sweet delight in this scenario is a poké bowl from City Poké. Unfortunately, none of the six City Poké locations is close to the beach area. Hence, I recommend ordering your choice via Glovo, Valencia’s main delivery service. That way you can get your order delivered to your closest possible location along the Passeig Marítim. Consequently, you can soak up the sun while indulging in your chosen culinary treat!

4. Thrift Shopping Adventures in Russafa

Valencia is filled with shopping opportunities. However, if you are a thrifting enthusiast, Russafa is your part of town! With a second-hand store on almost every corner, it’s impossible not to find a new favorite clothing piece. Each shop has its own unique vibe to enjoy, and is filled with hidden gems just waiting to be discovered by you. You’ll love browsing through Valencia’s artistically bohemian quarter! And while shopping is a treat, it can get exhausting after a couple of hours. That’s why I think you will appreciate the many restaurants, cute cafés and bars all around you. They are perfect to unwind after a successful bargain hunt!

5. Late-Night Kebab at Ciudad de las Artes

In Germany you can always count on one kebab shop being open after the clubs close. Naturally, it is a necessity to aquire one of those Turkish delights (pun intended). Besides, nothing beats enjoying a savory Döner on your way home after a night out. During my party days in my home country, this behaviour was almost a routine at one point. Which probably explains why the craving for this particular snack mainly occurs late at night. One of the last times this happened, it was almost past midnight, and I was on a kebab hunt with a German friend of mine. Every store around us had closed, but we found one open for another hour thanks to a quick Google search. As it was located near the Ciudad de las Artes, we quickly made the choice to make another stop. We ended the night in front of the beautifully lit constructions and enjoyed our snack with a spectacular view. Therefore, next time you crave a midnight treat, consider enjoying a delicious kebab in front of Valencia’s architectural masterpieces.
